Dear Bellevue Community:
The collective Bellevue Sports Boards has recently started planning to improve the Bellevue High School (BHS) weight room for all 1500+ students attending BHS. We have been working side by side with the Bellevue School District (BSD), the various sports and school programs at BHS to make sure the fitness center is outfitted to support each and every student. Alongside the BHS Physical Education Department, twenty-six athletic teams supported by teachers, staff, coaches, and trainers, and over 600 participating students each year, demand for the highest quality space and equipment is at a premium. Over the years our community has recognized the need for a safe and accessible training facility for our students and athletes.
To date, we have part of the funds committed from nearly all 20 of the BHS Sports Boards, plus financial support from Bellevue High School totaling $40,000. To make the defined improvements requested from all the various programs the financial goal was set at $100,000. In consulting with our teachers and coaches we have put together a list of equipment and features that will serve the needs of all students from those with injuries or limited mobility to the most gifted athlete. The range of activities available with the new and refurbished equipment was chosen to promote a wide range of accessible and varied exercises and movement to promote physical health, strength, and stamina.
In addition, students across the district have experienced a sense of loss brought on by the current pandemic and subsequent school building closures, and the cancellation of activities and events. This gesture of coming together to contribute to our school and facility is one way of giving back and leaving a legacy for those students and families who lived through this period while giving our current and future students something to take pride in while fostering an increased sense of personal health and well-being.
We are asking our community for support to raise the additional $60,000 by May 1st so we can plan for the build-out in July. All the monies raised will go to complete upgrades to the walls, ceiling, and substantial improvement in weights, equipment, and the necessary other pieces to make a BHS Wolverine Spirited fully equipped workout gym.
The Bellevue community has always been very generous, and a solid participant in our children’s community. We are committed to make this happen and look forward to the years ahead of good health and activity to promote the well-being of each and every student at Bellevue High School, during the school day in PE classes, to athletic teams and clubs that make use of our school and facilities.
